Thyroid Gland Hormones

The thyroid gland, located at the base of the neck, controls the rate of metabolism for every cell in the body. The parathyroids, attached to the thyroid, control bone metabolism.

  • Thyroxin (T4) is made in the thyroid, then converted to triiodothyronine (T3) and reverse T3 in the cells.
  • T3 increases cellular uptake of nutrients and break-down of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, increasing heat production, lowering blood sugar and cholesterol. It also stimulates nerve growth and activity. Reverse T3 does the opposite.
  • Calcitonin puts calcium into the bones and teeth, while the parathyroid glands produce parathormone to draw calcium out of the bones.
Nervous system: sympathetic (fight-or-flight) dominant.
